ONE LOVE!

Watch in new window… Play in New Window

Playing for Change is a media project created by Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono , that brings musicians from around the world together to play their own interpretation of a song. When recorded the sum is unimaginably better than it’s parts as what may have seemed like many diverse musical styles converge into harmonious melody. Playing For Change also created a separate non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation which builds music schools for children around the world.

I must confess I only became aware of the project when I heard “ Stand by Me ” in November of 2008. Mark and Enzo started Playing for Change in 2004 with the organization’s self described goal to “inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music”. They traveled around the world to places such as New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland. Using mobile recording technology. Mark had local musicians perform the same song, interpreted into their own style. “Stand by Me”, began with Roger Ridley, a performer from Santa Monica who has since passed away. They then traveled around the world and had more musicians add their versions, which were mixed together for the final version. Artists participating, or openly involved in the project, include Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono,, Grandpa Elliott.

The main theme throughout this project seems to be the belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome what separates us. Whether we are from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the ability to transcend and unite us as one human race. Very reminiscent of the scene in the movie “I am Legend” starring Will Smith. The scene has become known as “The Bob Marley Scene.

He believed that you can cure-actually cure hate and racism, by injecting it with love and music. Two days before Bob Marley was supposed to perform he was shot. Two days later he walked on stage and performed and they asked him in a interview why didn’t he rest, and he said “The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off , why should I. Light up the darkness”

True to the cause you can follow playing for change on Facebook and MySpace. You can also subscribe to their YouTube Channel. You can even buy the CD and DVD from Amazon.com. The Playing for Change Foundation accepts donations. You can help build music schools throughout the world that will promote the ideas outlined above. If you really want to get involved you can start by hosting DVD Viewing Parties or Host a Fundraising Event.
